Hey all, I just wanted to see if I could hear some recommendations for a set of good computer speakers, I'd want a 5.1 system.
My most recent set of speakers were the Logitech Z-5500, they get raved about all the time as being the best but I was actually pretty disappointed when I got them. The mid-range is like non-existent and the system as a whole just didn't sound that great to me. The Boston speakers I got with my old Gateway computers I think actually sounded a shitload better than the Logitech speakers ever did. I hear some people avoid PC speakers all together and have cheap home theater set ups they hook their comps up to.
Anyway, figured some people on here might have some good suggestions, so let me know.

Good Pc Speakers?

You are crazy if you think the Logitech Z5500 isn't good. Seriously.
It's bloody brilliant. The only downside to it is that it's quite expensive. But they're not even that good for PC, I use them on my PS3/media player for movies, and it kicks major ass.
For PC I don't recommend trying anything fancy. I got a bunch of cheap Philips 5.1 speakers, but I hardly even use the surround. I think a PC is better off with a decent 2-channel system.

Yeh my ZZ500's are awesome, I highly recommend them and they sound better than any cheap home theatre in a box systems out there. I brought mine for less than 150 US which is really cheap for a decent home theatre system, so I dont know why you think there expensive Alex.
You get what you pay for, if you really wanna hear the midrange, fork out $5000 grand for a proper home theatre....what a waste that would hooking up to a pc though

Because mine were €360 which is roughly $500. At $150 they'd be a bargain, not this lucky though. They were half the price like 2 years ago but I was too cheap then to buy them, so now I had to pay all this money.
Well I actually got them for Christmas from my dad so technically I have spent jack shit, but just saying here they're quite expensive, always were, even when they were cheaper.
P.S. = They seem even more expensive in the U.K., at least according to Amazon.

Well I'm not the only one who was disappointed with the Z5500 out there, the lack of midrange really irks me about the system, especially considering how expensive they are like you said. Really a good deal there though killer if you got them for 150, I think I paid about 350 for mine. If it comes down to it I might just set them up with my TV and Xbox and they might sound awesome that way.
As far as 5,000 bucks for a good home theatre system, I dunno, I remember finding websites where kids will come up with recommendations for setups that could come around to 300-400 bucks and supposedly blow away the sound of the Z5500, but who knows really.
Giving it thought though, I got a new laptop coming in and figure I'll just go with a 2.1 system, I heard Klipsch was pretty good so I might give them a shot.

ideal situation for listening to music:
link your pc to a NAD C320BEE integrated stereo amplifier connected to Focal JMLab Chorus 706s speakers

if you want a desk-friendlier speaker set, go 2.1
Aside from above combo, i also have a Logitech Z2300 set:

Great sound for a relatively low budget. Though the bass is a little too present; if it's turned a bit down, it's fine.
I've also heard good things about the Creative GigaWorks T3 set.
Klipsch also has great sets. In fact, way better than logitech or creative's. But, klipsch is like apple; you pay half the money for just the design. I don't recommend klipsch for that reason.
also, don't forget how important your sound card is
Creative makes nice soundcards with their X-Fi series (I have a 'Sound Blaster X-Fi XtremeMusic' card; recommended), but other less mainstream companies make better cards.
Auzentech makes great cards based on the X-Fi chips, and M-Audio makes professional cards.
